More were certainly sold than we can show you in that sparse middle: the list thins there, the roads did not. The latest decade contains 43 make + model strings, a revival in what we have found so far, even if the old clutch pedal did not return with it.

In the 1980s the choice was gloriously untidy. 10 makes produced 43 model strings: compact Isuzus, Jeeps, Mazdas, Mitsubishis and Toyotas mixed with the larger American trucks. By the 2000s, the list had narrowed to 2 model strings from 2 makes. That is the narrowest this list gets, not a declaration that every other diesel truck had vanished from America.

Diesel pickups by decade

The change is stark. The 1980s supplies 195 versions across 43 model strings. The 2000s supplies 76 versions across two. Then the list starts expanding again: the 2020s reaches 43 model strings from 4 makes. The modern diesel revival is not a return to the small-truck jumble shown in the 1980s, but it is a much broader range than the one we can show for the 2000s.

The light-duty diesels this list loses

5 makes appear before 1990 and never again in this list: Isuzu, Jeep, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Toyota. Those compact diesel pickups give the early years their variety. Once they drop out of these rows, what remains leans toward the big working truck: more torque, more towing intent and far fewer badges in view.

The 2000s are the narrowest point. There are 76 versions, but only 2 model strings from 2 makes. All 76 have manual gearboxes. It is a concentrated glimpse of heavy-duty diesel pickups, and a floor rather than the whole 2000s market, before the list widens again.

The Mercedes-sourced G56 six-speed carried on in the Ram 2500/3500 through 2018, making that truck the final act for the full-size diesel pickup with a clutch pedal. A dual-clutch is not a manual: these counts require a clutch pedal.

18 make + model strings from 4 makes produce 40 versions. Chevrolet, Ford, GMC and Ram now stretch diesel from a Silverado 1500 to an F-450 Super Duty and Ram 3500. Among the trucks we have tracked, the little diesel pickup has dropped away while the engine appears in half-tons and remains at home in the biggest pickups.

Across the full span there are 830 versions, 78 make + model strings and 12 makes. The shape of this list is a proper truck story: broad small-diesel choice in the 1980s, a thin and incomplete middle showing two heavy-duty model strings in the 2000s, and a modern revival to 43 model strings in the 2020s.
