US two-wheel-drive pickup versions and a 15-family availability check, through 2026.
Two-wheel drive shrank. Most names stayed.
A restaurant can fill three pages with elaborate burgers without removing the
plain one. Pickups have managed something similar. The two-wheel-drive share falls from
53.4% in 1990 to 31.7% in 2026 in the trim comparison below.
But 12 of the fifteen reviewed families still have a 2WD entry in the latest list.
The plain burger is harder to spot. It has not vanished from every menu.
RWD, FWD and explicit 2WD shares among US rows with known drive, separately by source; versions offered, not sales. Partial MY2027 excluded.
Which pickups actually lose two-wheel drive?
The sustained losses in this comparison number 2. Titan XD's final
2WD year here is 2019, with four-wheel-drive versions continuing from 2020 through 2024.
Ridgeline's front-wheel-drive choice ends in 2020; the following years show all-wheel drive.
Those are option withdrawals while the truck itself continues. Nissan's ordinary Titan
is a useful counterexample: its last 2WD entry and its last entry of any kind both fall in
2024. That does not establish a separate loss of two-wheel drive. The name leaves this
list with the option still attached.
Front-wheel drive belongs in this argument. A front-drive Ridgeline or Maverick has two
driven wheels just as surely as a rear-drive work truck does. Excluding it because the
engine points the wrong way would be a rather theatrical way to miscount wheels.
Which pickup families still have a 2WD version?
No 2WD found2WD found nothing filed
Fifteen reviewed US pickup families; empty cells mean absent or uncertain drive, not withdrawal. Dark cells include front-wheel drive.
The family-by-family answer
Reviewed US nameplate families, 1990–2026; withdrawal requires later consecutive known-drive years without 2WD, not a missing year or a nameplate exit.

Within this list, the 2026 survivors are Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, Ford Maverick, Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, GMC Sierra 1500, Hyundai Santa Cruz, Nissan Frontier, Ram 1500, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra. That is a broad
spread, from smaller unibody pickups to the familiar half-tons. These entries are not a
promise that a particular trim is waiting at your nearest dealer. They show why a falling
percentage alone cannot support a funeral for the whole category.
The Ridgeline change is particularly clear: Honda made all-wheel drive standard for
2021. Nissan likewise described the 2020 Titan XD as a Crew Cab 4x4 range. Two clean
examples are worth more than a sweeping claim assembled from an untidy percentage.
Less of the menu is not the same as no choice
Imagine one two-wheel-drive work version sitting beside ten four-wheel-drive packages.
Add ten more four-wheel-drive packages and the 2WD share almost halves. The buyer who
wanted that work version has lost nothing. Percentages measure the shape of the menu;
the family grid asks whether the plain option remains.
The retreat is real in the versions shown here. The claim that every pickup is becoming
four-wheel-drive-only is not. Both can be true without inventing a mystery about what
buyers secretly want. Nothing in a list of versions tells us how many people bought them.

The sensible conclusion is smaller than the dramatic one. Two named pickups lose an
option; many others retain it inside a much busier brochure. Read the menu before
mourning the burger.
