The short pickup list shrank, then changed shape

A garage does not care what the brochure calls compact. It has a back wall, a door and no interest in negotiations. Draw the line at 5,300 mm overall and this list shrinks from 18 entries in 1991 to one in 2021. Then two newcomers arrive. The 2026 short list is Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Short means length, not a badge

Five metres and thirty centimetres is a ruler test, not an official pickup class. A short full-size truck can pass it. A long version of a supposedly smaller truck can fail. This is why the early list includes Silverado and Sierra versions as well as familiar compact names: a big badge does not automatically mean a long truck.

There are 2 names here in 2026, but the interesting bit happens before that. Frontier is the sole remaining name below the line in 2021. From 2022 it is Maverick and Santa Cruz instead. The old tenant has left; two different trucks have taken the parking spaces.

Both newcomers offer a short answer to the parking question. Neither makes an old Ranger and a new Ranger the same size. Names are reusable. Garage doors are less flexible.

The same names against the same ruler

Ranger's last short year here is 2011. Tacoma follows in 2015; Frontier lasts through 2021. All three names appear again in the 2026 comparison, with measured lengths above the line. The list runs thin in places; the roads did not. The newer Ranger, Tacoma and Frontier have simply outgrown this particular garage.

This is also why a single average length would miss the useful answer. A buyer with a tight parking space does not need to know whether a fleet of enormous pickups became slightly more enormous. The question is whether anything still fits. Maverick and Santa Cruz say yes. They do not restore eighteen choices.

Every measured model year

Do not read the ruler as a verdict on everything else. A truck under the line may still be awkwardly wide. A longer one may carry something you genuinely need. Overall length says nothing on its own about load capacity, turning circle or whether the bed accepts the awkward thing currently sitting in your hallway.

It does answer one small, stubbornly physical question. The modern short pickup did return in this list, but with new names and a much shorter guest list. The garage has not become unreasonable. It simply remembers its original dimensions.
