The hybrid pickup had a first act

A reunion tour is easier to sell when everyone has forgotten the first album. Hybrid pickups have rather benefited from that arrangement. Chevrolet and GMC already appear in this list in 2004. Their two-mode trucks run here from 2009 through 2013, then no hybrids appear here for two model years. The next entries are from 2016, well before the electric pickups appear in this list.

The first wave was not one kind of hybrid

The early Silverado and Sierra used a starter-generator arrangement. They were not battery-electric trucks with an engine retained for emergencies. Nor should they be confused with the later two-mode system merely because the same word appeared on the badge.

The two-mode pickups are the 2009–13 act in this list: a different hybrid system, paired here with the 6.0-litre V8. Giving both generations one vague “hybrid” label is like filing a kettle and a locomotive under “things that get warm”. Technically tidy. Not terribly informative.

Then comes the gap. No hybrid pickup family appears here in 2014 or 2015. The next entries are the 2016 Silverado and Sierra mild hybrids, not the return of the old two-mode truck. The familiar badge now describes a different system.

The return spreads beyond two GM badges

Ram's mild hybrids enter in 2019. Later the list adds Maverick, Tundra, F-150 and Tacoma full hybrids. Ford's PowerBoost was already a 2021-model-year truck; its entries below start later. The list arrives late to that party, not the Ford.

A mild hybrid and a full hybrid do not promise the same electric driving. A starter-generator helping the engine is not the same proposition as a truck that can move on electric power alone. The badge is a beginning, not an explanation.

Every battery-electric pickup family in this list

The electric side contains 7 pickup families through 2026. It includes F-150 Lightning and Lordstown Endurance as well as the more obvious recent names. A Lightning and an Endurance can share a power source without sharing much of a personality.

Lightning appears for 2022–25 here; the list runs thin after that, not necessarily Ford's ambitions. An absent guest is not automatically a departed one.

These electric pickups also answer a different question from the early GM hybrids. A battery-electric truck has no combustion engine to keep the journey going when the battery runs low. A hybrid still burns fuel. Both involve electric motors; that is not permission to pretend their ownership routines are identical.

The two waves, year by year

The interesting history is not a straight march from petrol to batteries. It is an early experiment, a retreat, a quieter return and then several different machines sharing the stage. Before buying the reunion merchandise, it is worth knowing which band has actually turned up.
